The schools rugby league season will come to an exciting conclusion this weekend, when the two remaining unbeaten teams in the Cup segment Isipathana College and S. Thomas’ College meet in the title deciding clash on Saturday.
With both teams winning all eight of their league games so far, and separated in the points table by just one and a half points, the winner-takes-all clash pits the two in-form teams of the school season in an enthralling final clash.
Isipathana have by far been the more prolific team in the league, scoring 52 tries, while the Thomians, who have scored 35 tries, have been the better defensive team, conceding no more than 20 points in a single outing and twice holding their opponents scoreless.
Both teams enjoyed good wins last week, with S. Thomas’ flattening the usually-competitive Science College 34-00 on the back of two tries from lanky winger Naveen Heenakankanamage who is also the leading try scorer this season, while Isipathana beat rivals Royal College 28-14 to ensure they remained undefeated heading into the deciding week.
Thomas’ beat St. Joseph’s 32-03, D.S.Senanayake College 40-06, Royal College 21-15, Trinity College 23-20 and Wesley College 19-00 in the first round of the tournament, before beating St. Anthony’s College 41-11 and St. Peter’s College 36-13, and then overcoming Science College in the second round.
Isipathana beat Dharmaraja College 61-15, St. Anthony’s 43-17, Kingswood College 53-05, St. Peter’s College 36-21 and Science College 29-23 in the first round. In the second round, Isipathana beat Wesley College 43-08, Trinity College 32-22 before defeating last year’s champions Royal College last week.
