The second round of the Schools Rugby League begins this week, with Isipathana College and S. Thomas’ College in pole position to contest for the title, having remained unbeaten through the first round of the competition, topping their respective groups.
The top four teams from both groups qualify for the cup competition, and will play the teams in the other group, in the second round.
Isipathana will open the second round fixtures when they take on Wesley College on Friday, with the Thomians taking on St. Anthony’s College on Saturday. The Pathanians will go on to play Trinity College, Royal College in the coming weeks, before taking on S. Thomas’ College, in what could be the title decider.
The Thomians will also have matches against St. Peter’ College and Science College.
Isipathana were prolific in the first round scoring 35 tries in their five games — an average of seven tries a game — but conceded five more than the Thomians did. The Pathanians faced little challenge in the first round with the closest margin of victory being the six-point win over Science College. They beat Dharmaraja College 61-15, St. Anthony’s College 43-17, Kingswood College 53-05 and St. Peter’s College 36-21 before beating Science College 29-23, in Segment 1B.
Thomas’ meanwhile beat St. Joseph’s College 32-03, D.S. Senanayale 40-06, Royal College 21-15, and Trinity College 23-20, before recording a 19-00 win over Wesley College.
If either of the unbeaten were to falter, Science College and Royal College are likely to pounce, both teams closest to the leaders. Science College have won four out of their five games, while the Royalists have drawn one and lost one, in addition to the three wins.
